Week 5 Guided Prayer
As I enter prayer now, I pause to be still; to breathe slowly, to re-center my scattered senses upon the presence of God
Our passage this week we’re meditating on is Matthew 6:19-24
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
No one can serve two masters. Either you will reject the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
We make space to consider fasting, giving, and feasting for this week
Fasting
what need or desire will you abstain from and trust God with as you seek Him?
Giving
Consider the ways you have offered or received generosity and its effect on you. How and what might God lead you to give?
Feasting
And what will you celebrate? Who will you invite to share in your celebration? What joy is waiting to fill your life as you remember God’s presence and faithfulness?
Let’s read our passage this week again and listen to what the Holy Spirit may be highlighting for you today.
If your eyes are healthy,[a] your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
No one can serve two masters. Either you will reject the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
In these verses, Jesus invites us to a deeper, more transformative way of living—one that focuses not on earthly treasures but on heavenly ones. He warns against the dangers of living with a divided heart. Earthly wealth is temporary and fleeting, while treasures in heaven are eternal and secure.
When we accept the invitation to trust God fully, when we recognize that everything we have is a gift from Him, we can freely give, knowing that He will provide for our every need. When we let go of the need to control our circumstances or our resources, the fear of not having enough, of losing what we’ve accumulated, or of missing out on the world’s fleeting pleasures, we break the power of fear and anxiety in our lives.
Our focus and attention shifts. What we value is what we focus on, is what shapes our lives. When we “set our hearts and minds on things above” (as Colossians 3 says), then our “spiritual eyes” see what God sees, our entire being will be full of light, and we get to experience the truly abundant life–filled with the peace, joy, and purpose–that Christ came to provide.
In what areas of my life am I holding on too tightly or fearing lack?
I surrender these areas to you now God, trusting in your goodness and faithful provision.
How can I reflect God’s generosity and bless others with my time, talents, and resources?
Father, help me to seek moments each day to delight in your presence, to celebrate and share who you are, and to remember that you are my greatest treasure, the source of my joy and peace, now and forever.
